About

National Housing Bank was setup in 1988 as a subsidiary of Reserve Bank of India. It is a principal agency promoting housing finance institutions both at local and regional levels and provides financial and other support to such institutions. The NHB on the advise of Reserve Bank of India has established a fund called as the General Fund,through which all the payments of the National Housing Bank are made. In 1999-2000 the bank borrowed Rs.667.00 crores from various sources. These include borrowings from the market by way of bonds and external borrowings from the ADB. The total disbursal made during 2000 is Rs.50.50 crores. NHB has so far sanctioned 282 projects under its various project finance schemes both direct as well as through the refinance window. Till June 2000 the Bank sanctioned 14 new projects.NHB signed an agreemetn of cooperation with Canada Mortage & Housing Corporation. The cooperation will be in areas related to housing & housing finance which will include mortgage insurance and development of innovative debt instruments for funding housing activities.
