Qualified foreign investors, or QFIs, can be individuals, groups or associations based abroad who are allowed by the government to invest directly in mutual funds and stocks of Indian companies.‘A QFI is a resident of a country which comply with FATF standards and is a signatory of IOSCO MMoU. His bank should also be in such a country.’
Earlier only FIIs / their sub-accounts and NRIs were allowed to directly invest in Indian equity market. In the new dispensation, a large number of Qualified Foreign Investors (QFIs), in particular, a large set of diversified individual foreign nationals and corporate who are desirous of investing in Indian equity market can invest on fully repatriable basis in:
Equity Secondary Market – Exchange Traded securities
  Mutual Funds
Equity Primary Market – IPO and FPO
Qualified Foreign Investors are different from foreign portfolio investors and non-resident Indians. A QFI can buy into stocks of any company listed on stock exchange after fulfilling the Know Your Customer norms through an Indian depository participant and obtaining the approval of the RBI. The QFIs have been mandated to make investments in Indian Mutual funds and Equities through a SEBI approved Qualified Depository Participant (QDP). SMC is SEBI approved QDP with CDSL (Depositories operational in India).
